The end-of-year results showed considerable improvement in the understanding and application of grammar rules among the students. The overall mean scores of the students in the English exams increased by 20% compared to previous years. Moreover, there was a significant decrease in common grammatical errors made by students in their assignments.

The increasing ubiquity of smartphones and tablets in households worldwide has also made accessibility of these educational apps easier. Regardless of location or time of the day, students can use these apps, provided they have internet access. Such easy access to learning materials is especially crucial in situations where traditional learning is hindered, like the COVID-19 pandemic and its resultant school closures.

John F. Kennedy Elementary has always been dedicated to its mission: nurturing an environment for students that facilitates both academic excellence and a love for learning. To support this mission, in 2018, the English department strategized to execute an unconventional plan to tackle the struggling writing skills among 5th graders. The approach was to use creative writing prompts based on popular books. The program aimed to tap into the students' engagement with familiar literature as a powerful tool for broadening their writing capability.

In an age when technology often eclipses the charm of printed books, educators and policy makers alike are championing the enhanced roles of classic literature in our middle schools. Long-standing stalwarts of academic syllabi, these time-honored narratives not only bring to life epochs long-gone but also harbor invaluable insights into human behavior and cultural contexts.

Observations also highlight the value of a robust vocabulary in strengthening writing skills. A good command on language and a wide array of words at one's disposal can refine the writer's expression, making their written work more engaging and effective. Using a thesaurus to find alternative words can be an easy way for writers to improve their vocabulary.

Writing is an essential skill that fits into several scenarios – personal, academic, or professional. It's a tool to express ideas, share knowledge, and communicate messages. Therefore, by improving one's writing abilities, they can successfully communicate their thoughts and ideas efficiently.

The program began by familiarizing students with books from various genres. Titles such as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," "A Wrinkle in Time," and "Charlotte’s Web" were selected due to their popularity and wide-ranging themes. After reading each book, children were presented with creative writing prompts based on various scenarios from the books. The prompts encouraged the students to explore new perspectives, develop creative ideas, and write their narratives.

Lastly, being open to learning and criticism can be observed in skilled writers. Attending workshops, taking online courses, and being receptive to feedback can significantly aid in honing and strengthening writing abilities.

Engaging students in the learning process does not always necessitate complicated or high-tech methodologies. Sometimes, the most effective solutions are those that do not stray far from traditional teaching techniques, but merely recreate them with a creative spark.

One of the challenges encountered during this program was the variation in the pace of learning among students. Differentiating instruction might be the solution in such cases, tailoring exercises according to the child's proficiency level. Furthermore, some students faced difficulty in accessing online games due to lack of necessary equipment at home. The school might need to provide such resources or find alternative methods for these students.

Observationally, individuals who enjoy reading often show growth in their writing capabilities over time. Reading exposes an individual to various writing styles, enriching their word bank, and indirectly teaching grammar and punctuation. A broad spectrum of reading materials; such as novels, newspapers, academic articles, and online blogs; can substantially improve writing.

One observed approach that exhibited successful results utilized a mix of school-based and home-based education. The teachers provided one-on-one attention to individual students, engaging in phonics-based instruction to meet their specific needs. They used flashcards and matching games, while also introducing synthetic phonics teaching that involved teaching the sounds of letters first before blending them into words. This approach was termed multisensory, as it engages several senses at once, creating a more engaging and memorable experience.

As the year commenced, the teachers ensured a smooth and consistent implementation of these grammar practice exercises. Classes were monitored and assessments were made at the end of every term to evaluate the progress of the students.
