What I show in the book is that families and communities have been able to weather this shift in American policy primarily by relying on women to be the ones to hold it together. The new 5,000-yen bill portrays educator Umeko Tsuda (1864-1929), who founded one of the first women's universities in Japan, while the 1,000-yen bill features a pioneering medical scientist, Shibasaburo Kitasato (1853-1931).

More than two-thirds of Americans´ unpaid caregiving work -- valued at $1 trillion annually -- is done by women, according to an analysis by the National Partnership for Women & Families based on 2023 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, homeschooling is not devoid of challenges. It requires a significant amount of time, effort, and patience from parents. Not all parents are equipped with the skills or the knowledge necessary for educating their children, especially in complex subjects.

Additionally, homeschooled children may miss out on certain social interactions acquired through traditional schooling, such as participating in team sports, school events, or interacting with a diverse group of peers. Many skeptics often question homeschooled children's readiness for real-world scenarios.
